Our website was down for about a week and a half due to several issues, so these notes are going up a little late. Fortunately, the feed is still live even when the site goes down; you can find it at http://switchpod.com/users/timetourists/feed.xml.

INTRODUCTION

The show opened with Sean and Sean talking about the website being down, and the fact that http://www.timetourists.com is owned by the Germans.

HUMOROUS HISTORY

This week’s segment focused on the CADAVER SYNOD, surely one of the weirdest court cases ever to take place in history. Sean’s reference came from an article by Prof. Donald E. Wilkes, Jr, but he also recommends the book The Bad Popes by Russell Chamberlain. It’s a very amusing read.

DEISM VS. ATHEISM / PRANK CALLS TO 1999

Sean and Sean had a spirited discussion about their spiritual views. Present Day Sean is a deist, and Future Sean is an atheist. That’s interesting enough. But then, they agreed to disagree and started prank calling 1999 Sean, whom they decided is a total idiot. He wasn’t buying it, though, and kept hanging up on them.

WHERE IS SEAN IN SPACE AND TIME?

Future Sean realized he was in Alexandria this week… but he wasn’t certain he was in the Alexandria in Egypt. Fortunately, Sean and Sean were able to confirm that he probably was in Egypt since there was a giant library, an enormous lighthouse, and Egpytian art. Oddly, there were very few Egyptians, since the Greeks who lived there didn’t like them very much!

Future Sean also considered that he could have been in Alexandria Troas, just north of the isle of Lesbos, which he thought was excited. But the isle of Lesbos is just another island in the Aegean; its reputation for female love was restricted to the poet Sappho much earlier in history.

ANOTHER PRANK CALL

Sean tried to give his past self some advice, but 1999 Sean wouldn’t listen to him and was mean and sarcastic instead. What a loser.

MOVIE REVIEW - FREQUENCY

Sean and Sean both hated this movie, and gave it an “F” for its crappy storyline and being way off on the whole issue of temporal anomalies. But next week, they’re reviewing “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” which they’re both excited about.

MUSIC NOTES

Intro/Outro: Roykksop, “So Easy,” [Melody A.M.]

First bumpers: Freezepop, “Science Genius Girl” and “Tender Lies,” [Forever]

Second bumpers: Gorillaz, “Kids With Guns” and “El Manana,” [Demon Days]

All music used under fair use guidelines.

It’s a sign of the times that I continue watching Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles despite my numerous complaints about the first two episodes. It’s not that the show is what I’d call compelling, especially compared to other Fox dramas like 24, Prison Break and House. It’s definitely not as good as cable shows like Rescue Me, The Shield or The Wire. As sci-fi, it’s nowhere near the level of a show like Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Stargate: SG-1 or Farscape. And it dreams of being as good as Lost or Jericho.

But Terminator: TSCC has something going for it that none of those other shows do, and that’s that it’s a big budget show based off two of the biggest action films of the 20th century, with lots of stuff getting blown up and killer robots on the rampage. And where Battlestar Galactica has traded in its awesome Cylon Centurions for pouty human clones, Terminator: TSCC has made sure to feature at least one good killer robot scene per episode thus far. And the third episode has an interesting twist, despite once again having some unbelievably lazy writing.

But since I don’t want to talk to my future counterpart about this show (since I don’t want him to accidentally give away the fate of the series), I’m going to go this one alone and share my thoughts while they’re fresh.

Here are the notes for Episode 2, which aired January 13th, 2008.

INTRODUCTION:

Sean and Sean opened by answering some questions from listeners, and Future Sean gave a description of his time machine. Apparently, the machine is about the size of a semi cab, and includes a small fold-down bed, a food dispenser and a shower stall where Sean can take care of his bodily needs. But the shower doesn’t use water; instead, it uses this gas that cleans his clothes and his body. There’s also this goop he can put on his face that prevents facial hair from growing.

Another question involved where Sean has been. His first two visits include Constantinople under Justinian I and Ancient China in AD 184 during the Yellow Turban Rebellion.

Present Day Sean said he’s received an email from a guy named Radeon who was very critical of last week’s show. Sean and Sean couldn’t care less, and Future Sean reminded listeners not to piss off a guy with a time machine. But both Seans agreed this week’s show could use some more humor, which led to the rollout of a new segment called:

HUMOROUS HISTORY

This week’s look at history involves putting animals on trial. PD Sean relayed a story from medieval France where some people in 1522 put some rats on trial. The rats failed to appear to show, and the rat’s lawyer gave an interesting reason why. Both Seans also brought up some other humorous stories. The sources for some of these came from:

HISTORY SEGMENT

Future Sean announced that he knows where he is this week — Ancient Carthage. The problem is that he doesn’t know WHEN he is. So, PD Sean decided to help him out by asking a question about which deity the people in the city worship. After some discussion, they decided that the people must worship Ba’al Hammon, which would place Future Sean somewhere around 500-700 BC. Reader Arachne suggested that Sean could narrow things down further if he could relate himself to Alexander the Great’s conquering of the world, but both Seans agreed he was too early in history for that to be helpful. They finally decided that Future Sean could relate himself to the existence of the Babylonian Empire, as well as finding out how many years the city of Carthage had been around (since it was built in 814 AD).

As a side note, both Seans mocked “1999 Sean,” whom they feel was an idiot for wasting his time in college. They even considered prank calling him in the future, since they both agree that trying to speak to him seriously isn’t going to do any good…

MOVIE REVIEW

This week’s film review featured Donnie Darko, though Sean and Sean first had to listen to clips from the film’s version of Mad World as well as the Tears for Fears original. The two Seans also realized they’d forgotten to give The Terminator a rating last week; they both gave it an A for neat time travel concepts and a good story overall.

The two Seans discussed Donnie Darko’s creative use of time travel in its story, and its theory about alternate, tangent timelines. In the film, the time travel theory worked very well, and asked a lot of interesting questions. PD Sean also noted that this is one of the few time travel films to feature God as a part of the mechanics. Though neither Sean felt the film used time travel extremely realistically, they did like the way it was implemented, and gave the film an A. They warned that next week’s film is not going to get an A, though.
